Winter Mileage
Why does mileage decrease during winter?
There are a number of reasons for decreases in fuel mileage during the winter months,
and most have to do with the way you run your car. Running the defrost for long periods,
leaving your car idling, and the weight of added snow all decrease your fuel economy.
What are some tips for improving mileage during winter?
1) Don't leave youre car idling to warm it up. Most engines only need to be run for
a minute or less to warm, and you can use a block heater if necessary. Leaving your
vehicle idling wastes fuel.
2) Brush off snow and remove ski racks when not in use. Both increase wind resistance
and add weight, decreasing your fuel economy.
3) Tire pressure decreases in lower temperatures. Be sure to check your tire pressure
once winter sets in.
